4 Apartment Renting Myths Busted

 In Blog

The search for the perfect apartment can sometimes be a long and conflicting process – especially if it’s your first time renting. Apartment living can be extremely rewarding and make sense financially, while still allowing you the freedom to express yourself and live an easier lifestyle. Here are the most common myths about renting that need to be squashed once and for all!

  1. You’re throwing away your money: This is the number one biggest myth out there. When you are a homeowner, there are numerous other costs that go into owning than simply the mortgage. There’s the property tax, insurance, HOA’s, and general wear and tear repairs to the house. All of that is money that doesn’t come back to you. When you rent, you don’t have to worry about any of those extraneous expenses. You pay your monthly dues, and sit back and relax.
  2. You’re locked into a lease: Leases can look like intimidating legal paperwork, but don’t let it freak you out. They contain important information that helps protect both parties. For example, leases usually state that a landlord isn’t allowed to come in unannounced or arbitrarily, or that they must give written notice at least 24 hours prior to entering the unit. Landlords also aren’t allowed to evict you without ample reason and documentation.
  3. You can’t decorate the way you want: There are a few landlords that don’t want painted walls, or larger cosmetic changes, but in general, renting still affords you the right to decorate as you’d like. You can easily personalize your space by hanging pictures, or decorating with tapestries, rugs, furniture, and lights. There’s lots that can be done to make the space your own!
  4. You pay a lot and get a little: The notion that renting costs a lot of money and only offers you limited space isn’t true. You can find a place that offers you ample space and accommodations for everything that you need, while staying within your budget. Not to mention, apartment living offers many more amenities than you’d typically find with a house on the same budget. On-site fitness centers, pools, dog parks, and playgrounds are things that come with your rent, and give you a huge bang for your buck.

There are many myths about renting versus buying a home. Owning a home is expensive, and a huge long-term commitment. Renting, on the other hand, allows you the freedom and flexibility you want, with the all the amenities you need. You can still decorate your space and make it your own, and have more of a disposable income to use on day-to-day things. What’s your favorite benefit of living in an apartment?
